Lakes
I work on many aspects of lake ecology, with an emphasis on aquatic plants. I am finishing work on the effects of milfoil weevils on Eurasian water-milfoil. I have also worked on the the phenology of aquatic plants and the ecophysiology of bladderworts.
Aquatic Plants
I am interested in the diversity of aquatic plants in our freshwater systems. Aquatic plants are critical to the lake ecosystem, offering aesthetic beauty, habitat, erosion control, sediment stabilization, oxygenation and nutrient modulation in all waters. I have a special fondness for pondweeds but my favorite plants are bladderworts. Along with several colleagues, I offer several plant identification workshops each year. Please contact me if you are interested in learning more.
Wild Rice
Wild rice is an aquatic grass, revered by the Ojibwa and prized by all. As an annual plant it must reseed itself every year and will have years of abundance and years of scarcity. I am involved in the WDNR's Strategic Analysis of Wild Rice, as a prelude to creating a Wild Rice Management Plan for Wisconsin.
Bogs and Peatlands
Peatlands in the northwoods are fascinating landscapes with an unusual chemistry and flora.
Science on Tap-Minocqua
Join us the first Wednesday of the month for our science cafe at the Minocqua Brewing Company, Minocqua WI.
Fairy Rings in the Huron Mountains
Rings of Brasenia schreberi captured our attention. A few of us spent three days in 2018 investigating the phenomena, and hope to return in 2019. See "Fairy Rings" under Field Notes.
